provocation 206 . Conflict of goals: jobs, climate, equality
I am stuck on the idea that creating jobs and dealing with climate heating are mostly in conflict with each other. We can let them play out in parallel with disruptive encounters, or use the apparent conflict to develop a more coherent set of approaches. But we must get past the idea, so powerful in Silicon Valley, that Green is really gold, because the third issue we have to deal with is inequality and its impact on politics.
In sum, any approach which deals with only one or two of
- climate heating
- jobs and income distribution
- inequality
is dysfunctional.
And as an aside, notice how many economics papers in the journals make no reference to any of these three.
