Economy is what economics is about. But take political economy. In that case the field is a study of the political economy, not political economics. The focus is on the subject, not the method.  Like math and statistics name  methods whereas physics or biology name the subject.

The difference is important: are we focused on what we do or on what we don’t yet understand?
